SUNDOWN

EVERGREEN, CO

The owners of this existing home came to TJA with unique requests for their remodel which was to include an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) for an art studio. The exteriors of their home were compromised, including the EIFS system and a failing roof. The original design was responsive to solar orientation and on a very symmetrical 45 degree plan. We were tasked with developing a new architectural language that fit the existing footprint of the house and also connected the main home to the desired studio.

The concept for this project began by breaking the existing footprint it into 3 parts. From the exterior, the rooflines were tilted up on either end in response to a central connecting element. From the interior, the master suite and an open kitchen/seating area surround the living room.

The architecture invites a feeling of gathering. Warm materials and a palette that integrates with the existing landscape feel both organic and engaging. The entry to the home boasts 12 ft doors that, when passed, offer direct views through the living room to the surrounding mountains. A connection between the kitchen and nearby seating area with the outdoors was established through placement of floor-to-ceiling windows and open points of access to a landscaped patio. The art studio matches the language of the main home in both form and materials and is linked by a steel and wooden pathway.

Project completed October 2022.
